Fine Autograph letter signed to “My dear Miss Fellowes”
saying she “was so very sorry to see by your card that you had left Esher - It was quite a painful surprise. We were prevented from going to your Studio on the evening we had intended to do so by the visit of an unlooked for friend, & on Sunday evening I did not go to church because my husband wished me to make a call with him on an acquaintance in Esher. I wish we had only known that you were leaving so soon... However our kind, good wishes go with you, & when you come next to Esher you must be sure to let us know. I return you Mr Rich’s letter which is a very nice, manly letter & I am heartily glad of it. I shall now, if any opportunity occurs of helping him not fail to do so. I am really heartily thankful when people turn out well, when they do not reject one’s little efforts to serve them. - or make them an ill returns...”, 3 sides 8vo., The Orchard, Esher, 23rd June no year circa

HUGHES
(Thomas, 1822-1896, Judge, Author of 'Tom Brown's Schooldays')
Fine Autograph Letter Signed to Harwood,
saying that he was sorry not to have seen him in London, but "heard of you from the Dean. It was not I, but Canon Curtis, who threw down the gauntlet as to the Burials Bill. It was quite impossible to allow his narrow nonsense to go unchallenged. I fear the parsons are going back rather than forward - it seems impossible for them to realize the true nobleness of the national idea. If they cannot rise to it & accept the position of officers appointed by the nation to do its highest work I see no reason for keeping the ... (I) hope the Dean is right but doubt it ... the question could not be tried practically without a row, & as the Bill will I take it be carried next session ... I shall not be farther north again then Birmingham till next year ...", 3 sides 8vo., Athenaeum Club headed paper, 25th October
