SEBASTIÁN GABRIEL (1811-1875, Infante of Spain and Portugal, great-grandson of Carlos III and of Maria I)

Autograph Letter Signed 'El Sobrino' (nephew) to his aide-de-camp and chamberlain, Colonel Merry, he begins in English 'Dear little beautefull oncle', then continues in Spanish, "If you are not going to the Academia tonight, tell me what Temple" told you "... so that I know and can answer him if he speaks to me at the Academia tonight", 1 side oblong 8vo., [Naples], 20th February

An old note, joined by a tab, explains that the Colonel had passed on to the Prince an invitation from Mr Temple, British Minister at Naples, to a ball that night at the Academia. The Prince's first wife (1832) was Amelia, daughter of Francesco I of the Two Sicilies.
He was born in Rio de Janeiro, where Maria I of Portugal (1732-1816) had gone to escape Napoleon. His own father died when he was less than a year old.
