PEDRO II (1825-1891, Emperor of Brazil 1831-1889)

Fine Letter Signed 'Pedro', in Portuguese, to FERDNAND II, the King of the Two Sicilies, (1810-1859) responding to his correspondent's letter saying that he has "received with great pleasure your letter dated 17th September announcing that Her Majesty the Queen, and Your August Consort has joyfully given birth on the 15th to a Royal Prince who will be baptised with the name Pasquale Maria Giovanni ...", countersigned by Paulino José Soares de SOUSA. (1808-1866, Brazilian Congressman, Statesman and Diplomat), 1 side folio with integral address leaf bearing a red wax seal with green and yellow ribbons, Palace at Rio de Janeiro, 23rd December

Also known as "the Magnanimous", Pedro was the second and last ruler of the Empire of Brazil. This document has a large bold example of his signature as "Pedro" instead of the usual "Emperor".
Ferdinand II (1810-1859) was King of the Two Sicilies from 1830 till his early death in 1859. Prince Pasquale (1852-1904) Count of Bari. was his eleventh child with his second wife Maria Theresa of Austria.
Paulino José Soares de Sousa was the 1st Count of Uruguai. He was the Brazilian Minister of Foreign Affairs from 1843-44 & 1849-53.
