KLEIBER (Erich, 1890-1956, Austrian Conductor and Composer)

Autograph postcard signed,in German with translation, to Frau Dr A. Geissmar saying that she will "realise, I am happily sunning myself in Fluren - may I come even 2 or 3 days earlier? I do feel that nothing is so important ...", 1 side postcard with autograph address and picture of Vienna on the verso, postmarked Vienna, 17th May, year illegible

Frau Geissmar's husband Leopoldus was a lawyer in Mannheim, where he ran a well-known series of concerts. He owned a Stradivarius, which his daughter Berthe, 1892-1949, brought out under her arm when she and her mother escaped from the Nazis in the 1930s. Kleiber is widely considered to be one of the legendary conductors of the 20th century. He was director of the Berlin State Opera for 1903 to 1915 when he was forced by the Nazis to leave Germany.
