'The Climber' is one of Benson's many tales of an ambitious woman bent on achieving social prominence. It is interesting to see him working on this formula prior to writing his crowning comic achievement, the Lucia series. The Cornhill Magazine(1860–1975) was a Victorian magazine and literary journal named after the publisher's address at 65 Cornhill in London. It serialised the works of the foremost writers of the time.
