METTERNICH (Prince Klemens, 1773-1859, Austrian Statesman, guiding force at the Congress of Vienna, 1814-1815)

Fine Clerk Written Letter, in French with Translation, Signed, addressed to the Comte de MARESCALCHI (Ferdinando, 1754-1816, Italian Diplomat and Politician) telling him that "The man called Mandolin Malta, Jewish, Austrian subject, escaped recently from Trieste after having committed a number of scams there. He has just been arrested as well as his brother in Genoa from where he was transported to Venice. A criminal trial has started in Trieste against this intriguer whose extradition I am in charge to request. I therefore hasten to request your Excellency to be willing to interpose his help in this matter in relation with his Government, and I can not doubt that this request will be accepted because he is an Austrian subject trying to escape the right reprobation of the laws by passing on the Italian territory and who is claimed by his natural judge ...", 1 side folio, Paris, 31st January

Metternich was an Austrian diplomat who was at the centre of European affairs for four decades as the Austrian Empire's foreign minister from 1809 and Chancellor from 1821 until the liberal Revolutions of 1848 forced his resignation.
When the Grand Orient of Italy was set up on 20 June 1805, Marescalchi was its grand conservator and prince Eugène de Beauharnais its grandmaster. Napoleon also made Marescalchi a count of the Kingdom of Italy in December 1810, grand chancellor of the Order of the Iron Crown and a member of all the Napoleonic orders. He was also member of the electoral college of Reno.
