RUSKIN (John, 1819-1900, Writer and Critic)

Autograph Letter Signed 'J. Ruskin' to Sir William TITE (1798-1873, Architect, President of the Royal Institute of British Architects, MP) saying that he is "truly sorry that we did not receive your invitation - probably it has gone to Perth, with other letters addressed to Mrs Ruskin - my address will in future be as above. I am very sorry I cannot come to dinner - I shall not even be able to call before leaving for Switzerland - we leave early next week ...", 1 side 8vo., Denmark Hill, Comberwell, Friday Evening, no year but circa

Ruskin married Effie Gray on 10th April 1848 at her home, Bowerswell, in Perth, once the residence of the Ruskin family. Their early life together was spent at 31 Park Street, Mayfair secured for them by Ruskin's father. Effie was too unwell to undertake the European tour of 1849, so Ruskin visited the Alps with his parents, gathering material for the third and fourth volumes of Modern Painters. The marriage was unhappy, with John's reportedly cruel and distrustful behaviour towards Effie the cause. The marriage was never consummated and was annulled in 1854.
With a manuscript note on the back in another hand "This note was written just at the time his wife left him. He was going to Switzerland & to that end sent Mrs R. home - but she never returned to him ...".
