RUSKIN (John, 1819-1900, Writer and Critic)

Autograph Letter Signed 'J. Ruskin' to Sir William TITE (1798-1873, Architect, President of the Royal Institute of British Architects, MP) saying that "Mrs Ruskin has just received a very kind note from Mr Tite - as I was on the point of writing to you myself - and as she is not very well today she hopes Mr Tite will excuse her deputing me to reply for her on the matter as it is my fault that we cannot have the pleasure of accepting the very kind invitation - I have been obliged for the present to make it a rule that I dine nowhere - otherwise I am kept up too late at night and am unfit for work in the morning. I found my health would not bear anything but children's hours, when I was last in London and I am now accordingly living as if I were only ten years old. I was about to write ... to ask if you would do me the favour of telling me where I could find a good engraving of the Greek accanthus leaf - of the best time - as used on the Corinthian capital. I want to know the exact mode of chiselling the lobes of the leaf and I do not know what type the architects of the present day consider authoritative in this matter. Pardon me for trespassing on your time ...", 2 sides 4to., Herne Hill, Saturday, no date but circa
