Her husband was John Campbell, 9th Duke of Argyll (1845-1914) Marquess of Lorne, Governor General of Canada 1878-83 so they had just returned from his posting there.
Arnold Royle was Prince Leopold's personal physician from 1876 until the Prince's death from a cerebral haemorrhage in 1884, The Queen appointed him a Groom of the Privy Chamber in November 1884, some months after Prince Leopold's death.
