GRISI
(Giulia, 1811-1869, Italian Opera Singer, one of the leading Soprano of the 19th Century)
Autograph Letter Signed to Mrs Gibbs
asking her is she would be "so kind as to let me know, if I may depend upon the Governess, and for the Ladies maid for my Daughters? The one that we have now, as you know, is not at all good ... and I told her already, that, next week she is to leave us. I have not been able to go to Ryde ... but if you and Lady Cheyne, think that it is necessary to go and seek for a maid, I shall go to day - but I hope that the favour you had the kindness to look out for me will surely come next week. I better not go to Ryde ..." with a postscript apologising for her bad handwriting, 3 sides 8vo., no place, Wednesday morning, no date, paper watermarked
After a brief first marriage to the French nobleman Count Gérard de Melcy and an affair with Frederick Stewart, 4th Marquess of Londonderry by whom she had a son, Grisi married "Mario the tenor" (Giovanni Matteo de Candia). From this marriage, the couple adopted her previous son under the styled name Fredo de Candia. The couple settled in Fulham, London and had a family of six daughters.
