WATTS (George Frederic, 1817-1904, O.M., R.A., Painter and Sculptor)

Autograph Letter Signed 'Signor' to Mr Bentinck thanking him for complying "with my request; with respect to your remarks about newspaper criticisms, when Tom Taylor applied to me ... I expressed my dislike of that sort of thing & said I thought it would be much better if Artists worked with less reference to that sort of publicity, and I never expected ... or asked him not to write his proposed review of my work, but gave him the key he required, & pointed out to him the qualities & effects I had arrived at. Indeed as I am sure I come in for my of abuse or stupid praise I would much rather you Tom Taylor gave an honest & intelligent critique ... I hope you have been having some good hunting ...", 3 sides 8vo., Sandown House, Esher, Surrey, 29th November

Watts is famous for his portraits, vast canvases and designs for murals in the Houses of Parliament, and symbolic pictures such as 'Hope'. Tom TAYLOR (1817-1880) was an English Dramatist and Editor of Punch from 1874.
