Tagore first became known outside India in 1912, when 'Gitanjali' was published with an introduction by Yeats. He received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1913 and did a lecture tour of the States between 1912 & 1913. He was knighted in 1915 but returned the honour in 1919 following the Amritsar massacre.
His many visits abroad not only reflected his vision, wider than India herself, but also raised money for his school at Santiniketan and unversity, Visva Bharati.
