BABBAGE WRITES ABOUT HIS FATHER'S DEATH BABBAGE (Charles, 1792-1871, Mathematician & Inventor, the "Father of the Computer")

Fine Autograph Letter signed to "Dear Cousin", the Rev. T. W. WINDEATT, (Thomas White, 1769-1827, Poet and Pastor) saying that "The gradually increasing infirmities of my father will have prepared you to expect his death which took place on Tuesday last at nine o'clock. My mother has been unable to write until my arrival. Will you have the kindness to inform any branches of the family residing at Totnes. It is not yet arranged on what day the funeral will take place but probably at the commencement of the ensuing week. With kindest regards to your mother and all her family ...", 1 side 4to., with conjugate autograph address leaf, Teignmouth, 8th February

The death of Babbage's father marked an important moment in Babbage's life, when he became independent of his father's awkward patronage. His marriage in 1814 at the age of only twenty three had placed a strain on his relationship with his father. Babbage's correspondent the Rev. Windeatt himself died that year as did Babbages's wife, Georgiana and two of his sons, Charles, his second born and Alexander who died with his mother.
