From one of the best-loved teachers of the 19th Century, one completely free from mannerisms, and impressive for her earnest regard for the music itself. Clara first met Robert Schumann, (1810-1856), when he lodged with the Wiecks and was supposed to be studying law. He used her melodies in several of his works, they married on 12th September 1840, and she gave the first performance of his Piano Concerto under Mendelssohn at the Gewandhaus on 1st January 1846. From 1856 to 1888 she played regularly in England. After her husband died she moved to her mother-in-law's in Berlin, then from 1863-1873 to Lichtenthaler, near Baden-Baden. From 1873-1878 she was intermittently in Berlin, and from 1878-1892 taught at the Hoch Conservatoire at Frankfurt. No mean composer herself, she published fine cadenzas for Beethoven Concertos, and edited her husband's works for Breitkopf and Härtel. A life-long friend of Brahms, her pupils remembered with awe and affection his visits to her studio.
