GREY (Charles, 1764-1845, 2nd Earl, Prime Minister of the Reform Bill)

Fine Letter Signed to "My dear Graham" saying that he owes "you the answer of Lord Hill, to my application in favour of the son of Commissioner Hill ...", with a note in another hand that "Lord Grey and Lord Hill's letters relating to J.E.D.H's Father in his early military career. 'Of great interest' ...", 1 side 8vo., no place, 29th August

In 1830, following the death of George IV and when the Duke of Wellington resigned on the question of Parliamentary reform, the Whigs finally returned to power, with Grey as Prime Minister. In 1831, he was made a member of the Order of the Garter. His term was a notable one, seeing passage of the Reform Act 1832, which finally saw the reform of the House of Commons, and the abolition of slavery throughout almost all of the British Empire in 1833 with the Slavery Abolition Act. The passing of the Reform Act was one of the most notable achievements of Grey's premiership.
