RUSSELL (Lord John, 1st Earl, 1792-1878, Prime Minister)

Early Autograph Letter Signed to Monsieur Humphreys telling him that "As I attend my intention of going thro' Geneva I could not give any ... to Mr Hertsch. But if you will be so good as to divert your letters to Thomas P. Brown Esq, 15 Norfolk St., Strand, & put on the top of the letter 'For Lord J. Russell' they will be sure to reach me. It would be very kind of you if you would pay to the postmaster at Genoa the postage of the letters he has sent to me at Paris. I hope we shall meet soon again ...", 1 side 4to., with integral autograph address leaf, Paris 8th October

Russell entered Parliament more out of a sense of duty and family tradition than out of serious political ambition. With the exception the 1806-1807 coalition government in which Russell's father had served, the Whigs had been out of power since 1783, and Russell could have had had no certain expectation of a ministerial career. In 1817, tired of the prospect of perpetual opposition, Russell resigned from Parliament. After spending a year out of politics and travelling on the continent, he changed his mind and re-entered Parliament for Tavistock at the 1818 general election.
