Fine Illustrated Autograph Letter Signed to 'Albert Rothenstein' to 'My dear Miss Fothergill' telling her that "John is busy eating & I must ..." here he has inserted a cartoon of someone seated at a table eating "eat, so I will write to him as I can wait no longer. Will you & Miss Evans come & dine with me here ... at 6.45. We had best dine at this early hour as we are to go out to a Music Hall afterwards ...", 1 side 8vo., 18 Fitzroy Street, Fitzroy Square, Sunday evening, no year

Born Rothenstein, he anglicised his surname to Rutherston in 1916 during the First World War as a sign of patriotism for England. He painted figures and landscape, illustrated books and designed posters and stage sets. He was a Member of the New English Art Club and held the post of Ruskin Master of Drawing in Oxford from 1929 to 1948. Max Beerbohm's cartoon of members of the New English Art Club indicate the differing personalities of the brothers with William standing, pontificating, on top of a table with his brother under the table.
