General Marian LANGIEWICZ (1827-1887) was a Polish patriot notable as a military leader of the January Uprising in 1863. At the end of the war he was imprisoned in the fortress of Josephstadt, from which he was released in 1865. He then lived at Solothurn as a citizen of the Swiss Republic.
General Józef HAUKE-BOSAK (1834-1871) was commander of the armed forces of the Krakow and Sandomierz provinces in the January Uprising and a participant in the Franco-Prussian war (1870-1871). After the uprising, he emigrated. In 1867 he came to Switzerland and settled in Carouge near Geneva . He took an active part in the life of Polish emigration and in several international associations. In the years 1867-1868, together with L. Bulewski, he was active in the Polish Republican Center. He belonged to the "Circle of Rationalists". He was a member of a standing committee referring to Giuseppe Mazzini's idea of the League of Peace and Freedom.
Mazzini was an Italian politician, journalist, and activist for the unification of Italy and spearhead of the Italian revolutionary movement. His efforts helped bring about the independent and unified Italy in place of the several separate states, many dominated by foreign powers, that existed until the 19th century. An Italian nationalist in the historical radical tradition and a proponent of social-democratic republicanism, Mazzini helped define the modern European movement for popular democracy in a republican state.
A Rare letter by Italian activist and nationalist Giuseppe Mazzini mentioning leading figures of the 1863 January uprising in Poland.
