LISTER
(Lord Joseph, 1827-1912, Pioneer of Antiseptic Surgery)
Autograph Letter Signed to “My dear Madam”
regretting “that, as I do not return to London till the 15th inst, I cannot see your son on Friday next. I shall be ready to do so on Tuesday the 16th at 12.30. Or if you would prefer an opinion earlier I would suggest that you might with great advantage consult Professor Watson Cheyne, 75 Harley Street...”, 2 sides 8vo., on black edged mourning paper, High Cliff, Lyme Regis, Dorset, 7th January
Lister was a surgeon, scientist, experimental pathologist and a pioneer of antiseptic surgery and preventative medicine. His research into bacteriology and infection in wounds raised his operative technique to a new plane where his observations, deductions and practices revolutionised surgery throughout the world. He advised on the antiseptic methods used in the operation on Edward VII on the scheduled day of his Coronation when Sir Frederick Treves gave him an Appendectomy and saved his life.
On 26th December 1883, Queen Victoria created Lister a baronet, of Park Crescent in the parish of St Marylebone in the county of Middlesex. On 8th February 1897, he was further honoured when Her Majesty raised him to the peerage as Baron Lister, of Lyme Regis in the county of Dorset. In the 1902 Coronation Honours list published on 26th June 1902 (the original day of King Edward VII's coronation), Lord Lister was appointed a privy counsellor and one of the original members of the new Order of Merit (OM). He received the order from the King on 8th August 1902, and was sworn a member of the Privy Council at Buckingham Palace on 11th August 1902.
Professor Watson CHEYNE
(1852-1932) was a renowned surgeon and bacteriologist. He contributed significantly to the development of antiseptic surgery. A student and later colleague of Sir Joseph Lister, Cheyne was a prolific researcher, practitioner, and writer.
