HORSLEY
(John Callcott, 1817-1903, R.A., Painter of Domestic Scenes and Portraits)
Autograph Letter Signed to ‘My dear
BICKNELL
’,
(Henry, 1818-1880, Patron of the Arts and Businessman, David Robert’s son-in-law) telling him that he is “
slaving
for this good cause (now in
sore straits
) & if you are inclined to help it through my agency the Hospital will rejoice & I shall be right glad!...” with a postscript mentioning an enclosure (not present), 1 side 8vo., Royal Academy of Arts headed paper, 17th February
Callcott organized exhibitions of Old Masters at the Royal Academy 1875-1890. In 1843 Horsley designed the first ever Christmas card, commissioned by Henry Cole. It caused some controversy because it depicted a small child drinking wine. He also designed the Horsley envelope, a pre-paid envelope that was the precursor to the postage stamp.
