HOLL (Frank, 1845-1888, Painter, R.A.)

Fine Autograph Letter Signed to Mr Davidson telling him that he is “very glad indeed to hear that you have all decided to come up to us... we will have a happy time, & I shall... take some time... without sitters & thus have a little of your company in the day time...” and he ends with a postscript referring to a box “that I picked up at Hawarden of a tree that I felled with Mr Gladstone...”, 3 sides 8vo., The Three Gables, Fitzjohn’s Avenue, 25th March

Holl specialised in somewhat sentimental paintings with a moment from a narrative situation, often drawing on the trends of social realism. He was also, especially in his later years when the demand for social realism slackened, a portrait painter, mostly of official-type portraits of distinguished and therefore elderly men, including members of the royal family. He died in his early 40s, which some contemporaries attributed to overwork.
