HARDY (Thomas, 1840-1928, Novelist & Poet)

Fine Autograph Letter Signed to Miss Gorst, (Hilda, daughter of Sir John Eldon, 1835-1916, Lawyer and Politician), explaining "lest you should be thinking of me severely for not sending the little story I promised", that the publishers, "owing (I believe) to a wish to secure the American Copyright", are keeping it back "for a time - thus preventing me from being so good as my word", and promising to send it when it appears, 1 side 8vo., on Athenaeum Club headed paper, 12 Mandeville Place, W., 4th June

Not in the "Collected Letters", 1978-1988.
Hardy had promised to send her the story in a letter of 6th February 1891. They had met at Mary, Lady Jeune's, whose weekly dinners were famous for bringing writers and politicians together. Lady Jeune was an old friend of Hilda's father.
