Autograph Letter Signed 'Louis Battenberg' to Lady Hunter, (Constance, wife, 1852, of Sir Paul Hunter, d. 1890, 2nd Baronet of Mortimer Hill, Berkshire). saying that "On receiving your note I went straight to the Duke of Connaught ... No reinforcements are likely to be sent out at present, but ... it is not impossible that the 1st Battalion Rifle Brigade may go", Prince Louis knows the Duke "had some news by telegraph from the Commander in Chief about the reinforcements during our stay at Nauplia" in the Peloponnese, "just a week ago, so you may make your mind quite easy ... Prince Louis, of the Hesse-Darmstadt Battenbergs, came to England and joined the Navy at 14; his distinguished career took him to First Sea Lord, 1912-1914. He was on Agincourt during the Russo-Turkish War of 1878 and then for a while commanded Osborne, but the Prince resigned in October 1879 as the post might hinder his career in the Royal Navy. In 1884 Prince Louis married Princess Alice's daughter Victoria.
Sir Paul Hunter was Colonel of the 1st Volunteer Battalion, the Berkshire Regiment, and their son Charles Roderick (b. 1858, from 1890 3rd Baronet) was at this time in the Rifle Brigade.
