HUGHES-43233-1.jpg
HUGHES (Thomas, 1822-1896, Judge, M.P., Author of ‘Tom Brown’s Schooldays’)

Fine Autograph letter signed to “Dear Thomson” saying that he has been thinking about “the presentation business... I have altered my mind slightly about the address. I think that, while adhering to the ‘no amounts’ & ‘alphabetical order’ for the rest of us, the names of the three great County Officers, viz The Lord Lieutenant, the Bishop & the High Sheriff, should head the list by themselves. This I think will stamp the document officially, & make it more valuable for the Precentor’s heirs. Then I incline to think we must all sign our names on the parchment engrossment. If this view is taken by the Committee of course it can’t be ready for the presentation day, so I should advise just a copy on a sheet of paper to be used on that day - then we can take our time & be sure of having the parchment carefully & beautifully illuminated. Nothing else occurs to me, except to enclose the address to be read out on presentation day and engrossed on the parchment. Of course it is only a suggestion to the Committee but if it is accepted please let the wording as much alone as you can & don’t put in Latin instead of English words...”, 2 sides 8vo., 14 Park Street, West, 15th November
