THE KING'S THEATRE, HAYMARKET
TRENCH
(Sir Frederick William, 1775-1859, M.P. and General)
Autograph Note Signed to his printer, with transcription,
being an insertion about Mr. Laporte, who "with great Liberality offered his theatre to their Majestys - gratis - altho' the day fixed on was that on which he intended to have his own annual Benefit, whereupon the King [William IV] was ... pleased to intimate that he would honor the opera house by going there in State ... a great advantage to Mr Laporte", especially if the decorations were allowed to remain "till the End of the Season - But unfortunate Circumstances having disappointed all Mr Laportes Expectations the Committee resolved to present him with the Sum of £50 ... We must date it Jun 16 before the Kings Death [20th June 1837] & I will date my Letter on the same Day", original alterations, 2 sides 8vo., no date, c.

TRYON
(Sir George, 1832-1893, Vice-Admiral, Lost in the ‘Victoria’ in collision with the ‘Camperdown’ off Tripoli)
Fine Autograph letter marked ‘Private’ signed, to Capt SUCKLING
(Thomas, 1844-1922) telling him that “the position of several of our chief officers & others in Coast Guard... is not well defined. I have sketched out something which I enclose. I propose Co. in Commd of Cruisers should bear the uniform of Ch.W.O. with the distinguishing marks of a Lieutenant, this gives them tail coat and frock coat... It is inexcusable that all should not be organised as to fit in when called to serve afloat, as it is, it is impossible. Please to give the subject your attention, freely criticise the draft I send and propose any plan that comes to you that you think is preferable...”, 2 sides 8vo., Admiralty headed paper, 18th October
