Begas came of a notable family of Berlin artists. He was responsible for the revival of German Baroque sculpture, enlivened with a wealth of feeling. Among his works were the Neptune Fountain at the Berliner Schloß, and monuments to Wilhelm I, Friedrich III and his Empress, Bismarck, Schiller and Humboldt.
