OKEY (Thomas, 1852-1935, Fellow of Gonville and Caius, Cambridge)

Autograph Letter Signed to Hermann Augustin Piehler, (1888-1987, Editor of Baedeker's and Dent's Guide Books), sending "the introduction to Lethaby", (William Richard Lethaby, 1857-1931, architect and Professor of Design at the Royal College of Art, South Kensington), he is sorry to say that "Mrs. Holman Hunt", (Edith, née Waugh, d.1931, second wife of the artist William Holman-Hunt, 1827-1910), "has fixed Saty 3.30 as sacred to us", though it is rather dubious "that my sister may venture so far in this chill dirty E Wind ... If we do come up & escape fairly early after tea we will give you a look up. Our most affectionate greetings", 2 sides 8vo., The Athenaeum, Pall Mall, S.W.1, 28th September

Okey was born in Spitalfields and educated at National and night schools in Bethnal Green, at evening classes at the Working Men's College and University Extension classes in Whitechapel. He was an apprentice and journeyman basket maker, 1865 - 1882, and a master basket maker 1882-1896. He taught Italian at Toynbee Hall, 1892-1901. He became a master of the Artworkers' Guild in 1914 and was Professor of Italian at Cambridge from 1919 to 1928. He translated guides and history in French, Italian and Spanish, wrote 'Venice and its Story' and 'Paris and its Story', and in 1930 'A Basket full of Memories'.
