Haakon VII, born Prince Carl of Denmark, was the first king of an independent Norway in modern times, elected when the Storthing declared the union with Sweden dissolved. In 1896 he married at Buckingham Palace Princess Maud, 1869-1938, youngest daughter of the future Edward VII. Haakon VII's father, Frederik VIII of Denmark, and George II's grandfather, George I of Greece, were brothers.
Admiral Fraser commanded the british fleet that engaged and finally sank the German battle cruiser Scharnhorst in December 1943.
