ALLENBY (Edmund, Viscount, 1861-1936, Field Marshal, High Commissioner of Egypt, 1919-1925)

Autograph Letter Signed 'Allenby' to Hampson GARY, (1873-1952, American Diplomat) thanking him for the "book 'As I know them' received by me, today, and for your kind wishes for the anniversary of my birthday ... Please convey to Mrs Hampson Gary and to your children, too, the expression of my gratitude. It is delightful, on such occasions to be remembered by one's old friends ...", 2 sides 8vo., with original autograph envelope signed with initial optimistically addressed to 'Hampson Gary Esq, Washington, U.S.A.' but redirected in blue pencil by the post office, 21st April paperclip mark not affecting the text

In 1915 Gary was appointed assistant solicitor in the State Department. In 1917 he was appointed by President Woodrow Wilson as diplomatic agent and consul general to Egypt in charge of American interests in Palestine, Syria, and Arabia, where he formed a close friendship with Field Marshal Viscount Allenby. It would have been difficult for him to forget his friend's birthday as they were born on the same day 23rd April, twelve years apart.
