FERRIER (Kathleen Mary, 1912-1953, Singer)

Superb photo by James Abresch signed, inscribed "For Mrs Willson, With all my best wishes ..." and dated, shoing her head and shoulders looking round and smiling broadly, 7" x 5", no place but stamped New York, slight damage to bottom right hand corner

Ferrier was an English contralto singer who achieved an international reputation as a stage, concert and recording artist, with a repertoire extending from folksong and popular ballads to the classical works of Bach, Brahms, Mahler and Elgar. Her death from cancer, at the height of her fame, was a shock to the musical world and particularly to the general public, which was kept in ignorance of the nature of her illness until after her death. She was especially known in Britain for her unaccompanied recording of the Northumbrian folk tune Blow the Wind Southerly, which was played regularly on BBC Radio for many years after her death.
