ADAMS (John Couch, 1819-1892, Cambridge Astronomer and Discoverer of Neptune)

Signature from an Autograph Letter Signed with subscription, "yours very truly", 3" x 1", Pembroke College, no date

Adams made observations determining the particulars of Neptune and deposited the results at the Royal Observatory, Greenwich in 1845, but the publication of his discovery was anticipated by Le Verrier in July 1846.
His lay fellowship at St John's College came to an end in 1852, and the existing statutes did not permit his re-election. However, Pembroke College, which possessed greater freedom, elected him in the following year to a lay fellowship which he held for the rest of his life.
