KLEIBER (Erich, 1890-1956, Austrian Conductor and Composer)

Autograph postcard signed,in German with translation, to Frau Dr A. Geissmar saying that "it is high time you heard from me and - in addition this time - that you send my regards on to your daughter ... At present I am getting a little rest here in rather primitive solitude, but it was extremely necessary! At the end of July I go on to Soppot where they've got me to do three performances of the 'Walkyrie' (for the Wadlfestspiele (Forest Festival). Then I shall get some time off ...", 1 side postcard with autograph address and picture of "Oliva, Luftkurort u Ostseebad" which he has written around on the verso, postmarked Danzig, June

Frau Geissmar's husband Leopoldus was a lawyer in Mannheim, where he ran a well-known series of concerts. He owned a Stradivarius, which his daughter Berthe, 1892-1949, brought out under her arm when she and her mother escaped from the Nazis in the 1930s. See Berthe's 'The Baton and the Jackboot, Recollections of Musical Life', London, 1947 (published in New York as 'Two Worlds of Music').
Kleiber is widely considered to be one of the legendary conductors of the 20th century. He was director of the Berlin State Opera for 1903 to 1915 when he was forced by the Nazis to leave Germany.
Sopot in Poland has the wonderfully located Opera Leśna (Forest Opera), a magical open-air theatre nestled in the middle of a serene hilly forest in the western district of the city.
