BULLER
(Sir Redvers, 1839-1908, Commander-in-chief in South Africa)
Autograph Letter Signed to Mr Cocks
saying he has "had a good many letters about Sir F. Milman all strongly recommending him and I have no doubt that he is a very good man. I do not though think that I have the slightest chance of being able to employ him ... any appointment I might make, though I do not at present see reasons to suppose that I should make any, would be temporary only and I imagine that that is the last thing Sir F. Milman wishes ...", 2 sides 8vo., Private Secretary's Lodge mourning paper, Dublin, 27th August
faded
In 1882 he was sent to the Sudan in command of an infantry brigade and fought at the battles of El Teb and Tamai, and the expedition to relieve General Gordon in 1885. He was promoted to major-general. He was sent to Ireland in 1886, to head an inquiry into moonlighting by police personnel. He returned to the Army as Quartermaster-General to the Forces the following year.
