BERESFORD
(Admiral Lord Charles, 1846-1919, M.P. for Portsmouth, Lover of 'Darling Daisy', Frances, Countess of Warwick)
Fine Autograph Letter Signed to Mr Eykyn
telling him that he "saw your friend Mr Marsden, he has a good invention for the Mercantile Marine but not applicable to the Navy. I have told him this. I imagine that it would be somewhat difficult to introduce it into the Mercantile Marine, as most of the Companies would say that it was an invention for settling a dispute over a collision and they regarded collisions as only a remote possibility. There is also a possibility of Captain, Engineer & helmsman veering to a different story than the instrument reported. It is clever and might often alter the compilation of evidence given, as to who was to blame for a collision ...", 4 sides 8vo., Royal Dockyard, Chatham, 3rd February
Beatty was promoted from Captain at the record age of 29 in 1900, and to Vice-Admiral on 1st Jan 1910 (hence his rings in these pictures). But he was not 'employed' till Jan 1912. (In between he worked for a time at the Admiralty under Churchill). He flew his Flag in Aboukir at the Fleet manoeuvres of July 1912, which may well be the present occasion.
