LEDERER (Charles, 1856-1925, American Cartoonist and Illustrtor)

Autograph Letter Signed with fine cartoon sketch on a sheet of Howes Norris Jr's printed letterhead, he starts by "Quoting from a letter just arrived from Chicago - 'As soon as I saw the name of the town I realised how foolish I was not to know that if there was a bar in Colorado, Charley would be hanging around it somewhere'. As a matter of fact my wife and I have had a strenuous time climbing mountains, getting over things wrecked on railroads and being snowbound for days at a time in our log cabin home on the spur of Grays Peak, over 10,000 feet above sea level. This has been going on ever since September last. I did not receive your other letter ..." with a delightful sketch of a bar in Colorado with the Landlord leaning aggressively over his counter which has a sign behind him "No Trust", talking to his customer who is wearing overalls and has a dog, Lederer has signed it with his surname in stylised capitals with a sketch of a bird "His Mark", 1 side 8vo., Winter Studio, Colorado, 12th January

From 1875 Lederer's illustrations appeared in such publications as Leslie's Weekly, Harper's, and the New York World. He moved to Chicago in 1877, and worked as book publisher, designer, and illustrator. He began illustrating daily papers there in 1883. He was also a writer, and illustrator of children's books.
Howes Norris Jr. (born 1867?) of Vineyard Haven, Massachusetts, was an avid collector of autographs from an early age. His Cartoon Autograph Collection consists of sketches and cartoons from notable cartoonists, signed and sent to Norris at his request. Many are drawn on Norris' letterhead which he apparently sent along with his request.
