MARKHAM (Sir Clements, 1830-1916, Geographer and President of the Royal Geographical Society)

Autograph Letter Signed to Dr Heaton thanking him and apologising for having "given you so much trouble - I left Newton Kyme on Friday ..." 1 side 8vo., 21 Eccleston Square, 11th January no year

John Deakin Heaton, (1817-1880, Physician who played a major role in the development of Leeds). From the letter he appears to have come over specially to Newton Kyme, on the Wharfe near Tadcaster, at this time the seat of Thomas Fairfax (1804-1882). Heaton and Markham were both Yorkshiremen and both had an interest in public health. Heaton had been appalled by the slums in Leeds and among other things promoted the famous Leeds Town Hall as a symbol of civic pride. Markham, working at the India Office, took an expedition to Peru to gather seeds of the cinchona, against the wishes of the Peruvian government, which led to its propagation in India to provide quinine.
