DESBOROUGH (John, 1608-1680, Parliamentary soldier and Politician in the Civil War)

Document signed confirming receipt from Sir George DOWNING (1st Baronet, c. 1624.5-1684, Preacher, Soldier, Statesman, Diplomat, Turncoat and Spy after whom Downing Street is named) of "the sum of two hundred and fifty pounds by virtue of an Order bearing date the 25th day of June 1658 due for me as one of his Highnesses Privie Councill vix for one Quarter of a year ...", 1 side folio, no place, 24th June worn at folds with no loss of text

Je also spelt his name Desbrowe or Desborow. He took an active part in the English Civil War. He commanded the horse at the storming of Bristol in 1645. Later he took part in the operations round Oxford. In 1648, as colonel he commanded the forces at Great Yarmouth.
He avoided all participation in the trial of Charles I. After the establishment of the Commonwealth he was much involved in the administration as a Treasury Commissioner, member of the Privy Council and the Council of State. In spite of his near relationship to the Protectors family, he was one of the most violent opponents of the assumption by Cromwell of the royal title.
