WELLINGTON (Arthur Wellesley, Duke of, 1769-1852, Field Marshal & Statesman)

Fine Autograph Letter marked "Private and Confidential", Signed 'Arthur Wellesley' to John BAGWELL (1751-1816, MP for the pre-Union Constituency of Tipperary and Colonel of the Tipperary Militia) saying he has shown his letter to the Lord Lieutenant and he has been asked "to tell you that he will appoint Mr William B. Stewart to the office which will be vacated by Mr Boyle, but ... particularly directs me to draw your attention to my last letter he wishes you to understand that although he will appoint a person whom you will recommend to ... Clonmell, if that office should become vacant, he cannot remove Mr Jephson from that Office without his own consent ...", 2 sides 4to.,Dublin Castle, 28th June

Bagwell built Marlfield House, Clonmel as the family residence. In 1774 he married Mary Hare, with whom he had six children, including William and Richard.
Shortly after this letter Wellesley left Ireland in July 1808 to participate in the war against French forces in the Iberian Peninsula, with his skills as a commander tested and developed. He defeated the French at the Battle of Roliça and the Battle of Vimeir and it was in the Peninsular War that he really rose to fame.
