Fire-gilding is a process of gilding metal using mercury. This frame has been renovated by gold plating as it is no longer possible to use fire-gilding as it is so dangerous. C. H. Preetz were a firm in Berlin who specialised in these remarkable frames and did a lot of work for the Imperial family.
