WAR IN THE LEVANT ITALIAN FLEET

Press photo by London News Agency, of the Italian squadron, taken from seaward, showing at least five warships in company, in a light sea, 10" x 8", no date, off Tripoli, c. February

The war between Italy and Turkey, September 1911 - October 1912, ended with Libya becoming an Italian colony. The main theatre was the N. African coast, supported by shows of force in the Dardanelles and the temporary occupation of Rhodes and neighbouring islands. The 'flimsy' on the verso says that the fleet's movements have been "mysterious since our photo was taken ... it is now reported to be in the Levant and to have bombarded Beirut".
