Kavanagh was born with under-developed arms and legs yet by force of will led a most adventurous life, especially in India. He learned to ride and sail better than many able-bodied men. He succeeded to the family estate of Borris, Co. Kildare, in 1853 and was an M.P. 1866-1880, using his special mechanical chair.
