KARL THEODOR (1724-1799, Elector Palatine from 1741, Elector of Bavaria from 1777)

Letter signed 'Carlo Teodoro E.' in Italian with translation, to the playwright  Marchese Francesco ALBERGATI CAPACELLI , (1728-1804), in Bologna, thanking him for "the good wishes which Your Most Illustrious Lordship has sent me on the occasion of the Feast of Christmas", assuring him "that I wish you in turn all happiness at all times", 1 side 4to. with address on conjugate leaf, large papered seal with full coat of arms, Munich, 6th January short slits in margins from releasing the sealed wrapper

The Marchese, senator of Bologna, was the friend of Goldoni, Alfieri and Voltaire, some of whose plays he translated. He wrote many comedies and took the leading roles. Karl Theodor was an Elector twice over and preferred Mannheim to Munich as his capital, having been brought up in the Rhine Palatinate. He was a great patron of architecture and music, his court orchestra being famous for the 'Mannheim Crescendo'. This letter was written during the French invasion.
