AITKEN (Mary Carlyle, 1843-1895, niece of Thomas Carlyle)

Autograph Letter Signed 'Mary Carlyle Aitken' and subscribed to 'Reverend Sir', saying that "Mr Carlyle, my uncle, bids me ask you to accept his cordial thanks for your very kind letter ... forwarded hither ... and also for the Book, which no doubt lies safe at Chelsea waiting his return", and that "when he gets back to London, it will give him much pleasure to make your acquaintance. We shall not be absent ... two or three weeks. I will, however send you a word when we get settled again at Chelsea", 2 sides oblong 8vo., Keston Lodge, Beckenham, 30th August

Mary was the daughter of Thomas Carlyle's sister Jean Aitken and the wife of Alexander, son of Thomas' brother Alexander. Looking after Thomas for the last ten years of his life, she was closely involved in preparing Jane Carlyle's letters for publication, and, after her uncle's death, his own.
