SELOUS
(Angiolo Robson, 1812-1883, Playwright)
Long interesting Autograph Letter Signed to 'My dear Sir',
(Benjamin Nottingham WEBSTER, 1797-1882, actor and from 1837 lessee of the Haymarket theatre), saying that the Reputation for enterprize which you so justly deserve, induces me to make the following proposal to you... I have a fine Art Play suitable for the only Theatre in London, not desecrated by the Mummeries of Ballet and Spectacle, as a stranger to you... I will deposit... one hundred Pounds to be compensation for failure, or a present if successful, a very slight insight into the style and construction will... be sufficient... If therefore you will permit me some Sunday morning... at your own residence I will read you a portion of one act... the principal members of your talented company would be required... Messrs Farren, Hudson, Holt, Brindal and Stewart, with Mrs Seymour and Miss Fortescue. - Such, Mr Webster is my proposal plainly and frankly told, and suggesting my Cheque on Hankey's & Co as perhaps sufficient reference, 2 sides 4to., 15 St. George's Terrace, Kennington, no date, watermark
