Background
Károlyi undertook many important missions, including one to Russia in 1858 to get help against Napoleon III, who was threatening the Austrian dominions in North Italy. He was ambassador at Berlin when war broke out in 1866 and was also involved in the preliminaries for peace between Prussia and Austria. He attended the Conference of Berlin in 1878 as second envoy plenipotentiary, and was Ambassador to Great Britain 1878-1888.
