Background
Dalrymple was ordered to succeed Sir Harry Burrard as Sir Arthur Wellesley's superior officer in Portugal on 7th August 1808. It was Dalrymple who signed the agreement to allow the French to retire after Wellesley's victory over Junot, whereupon all three generals were ordered back to London. They were exonerated by a majority verdict, and for the moment Portugal was left in peace.
