Cardwell was President of the Board of Trade under Lord Aberdeen, 1852-1855, Secretary for Ireland under Lord Palmerston, 1859-1861, and for the Colonies 1864-1866.As Secretary for War under Gladstone, Cardwell abolished the purchase of commissions and reorganised the grouping and names of the regiments.
