Background
Sir Duncan was M.P. for Argyllshire, 1843-1851, and Lord Advocate for Scotland 1842-1846. Sir James incurred considerable odium in Scotland over the legal rights of State courts in Church matters, and over the right of patrons to 'intrude' ministers, which led to the Disruption of 1843.
