Background
As Secretary for War, 1882-1885, Lord Hartington was partly responsible for sending Gordon to the Sudan and for the failure to rescue him from Khartoum. In 1886 he split from Gladstone over Home Rule for Ireland and with the radical Joseph Chamberlain founded the Liberal Unionists.
