Background
Henry Scott Holland, author of the hymn 'Judge eternal, throned in splendour', was long identified with social and economic problems, and was a founder of the Christian Social Union. Henry Drummond, 1851-1897, lectured in Natural Science at the Free Church College in Glasgow, 1877, published 'Natural Law in the Spiritual World', 1883, and spent a year in scientific exploration in Africa. In 1884 he was ordained in the Free Church and became Professor of Theology at New College, Edinburgh, publishing 'The Ascent of Man' in 1894.
